Mac (and Tim?), ProTools does allow audible scrubbing. Depending how you have your session set up with keyboard shortcuts, you can press and hold the CONTROL key (on Mac)/SHIFT key (Windows) which will then allow you to scrub audio with the cursor. And it's actually pretty easy to do with a mouse. 
What's NOT easy to do are nice manual fades.
For a simple control surface, I have looked into the Presonus Faderport. I have not had any firsthand experience with it, though ( ). Being a college student, I try to save where I can and since my university has a 003 interface, I just hook up to that when I need a control surface. The Faderport looks like it would be great for on-the-road editing/mixing, though, especially because it works with multiple programs. There's no scrubbing wheel, but there is a transport section. Pro Tools LE 7.1cs10 for Mac OS X 10.4. The last version for osx 10.4/5 is supposed to have the pace drivers included on what the latest protools version is that can utilize the digi.

Now if I had HD.different story (-: Agreed. I guess I get why they do it, but it's still one of the most annoying aspects of it. And yes, and HD system would most definitely make me think otherwise. 
I have thought a number of times about moving over to MOTU's DP and one of their interfaces, but I need to see just what type of work I'll be doing after I graduate (anything and everything production-related works for me!).

This morning I hopped over to the Digi forums to check it out and if anyone else was having the same issue. And in the stickies, I found out they have an update for the software. So tonight I am going to download the.cs8 file and see if it takes care of it. I am surprised no one else had this problem.
